Medical Leave

I am still on medical leave. It has been a little more of a rehab than my family and I planned. Surgery on the bottom of your foot is never a good thing especially a mass 3x2x1 taken out. I'm getting better week by week. This time on the couch has given me lots of time to read and research ideas for next year. I'm hoping to get back for the last couple of weeks of school.

I would like to talk about Class Dojo. I started using this app last year and I am so pleased with all the wonderful things it has done in my classroom. It is basically an app used for discipline. The teacher has the ability to go in and add positive behavior and negative behaviors. I like this because you are able to keep track of all the wonderful things your children do on a regular basis. For example:

Positive Behaviors

  • Being Prepared
  • Working Hard
  • Cooperation
  • Good  Report in Special Classes
  • Helping Others
  • Listening
  • Lunchroom - Good Behavior
  • On Task
  • Best Work
  • Participating
Negative Behaviors - Labeled Needs Work

  • Bullying
  • Disrespect
  • Hands on Others
  • Lunchroom
  • No Homework
  • Off Task
  • Out of Seat
  • Special Classes
  • Talking out of Turn
  • Unprepared
Every time I give a positive point the child goes to the Dojo Jar and gets a pom pom. They collect them all week and then turn them in for prizes at the end of the week. When the child receives a "Need Works" point they have to turn in a pom pom. I like for their to be a tangible item for kids this young.

I keep my cell phone with me so I'm able to give and take away points on my phone or computer. The students also know how to give themselves points and take a point away on the iPads or classroom computer. The app averages the grade for the day, week or month. You are able to go in a set up a custom date range. This is a huge help for me when giving a conduct grade. I write their daily grade in their folders and I have the app set up to average it as the week goes on. We start over each week.

The best part of the app is the parents are able to download the app and check on their child's progress at any time. It also allows me to text them individually or as a class thru the app. They may use their cell phone or computer. The students are also able to change their avatar.

Class Dojo has made discipline in my classroom a non-issue. Go to www.classdojo.com and check it out or email me at kposey@mjca.org
